Baby Giraffe Born at Roosevelt Park Zoo! (August 11, 2010)

MINOT, ND – Roosevelt Park Zoo is excited to announce and welcome a new addition to their zoo family, a baby Reticulated giraffe.

The female calf was born late Saturday afternoon. She stands almost six feet tall and weighs 130 pounds! The birth went very smooth, and the baby is strong and healthy.

This is the third giraffe born to the breeding pair of giraffe at Roosevelt Park Zoo. Mother, Kianga, and father, Mashama, are recommended to breed through the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, Giraffe Population Management Plan.

The calf, which is yet to be named, is bonding with the mother. The mother and calf are being kept separate from the father as a safety precaution. However, the father has only shown a great amount of care and love for our new baby giraffe. The zoo will have the mother and calf on exhibit and plans to alternate the father on exhibit each day.

We are inviting the public to help name the baby! From now until September 7th we will be taking voting donations to help select the perfect giraffe name for the young calf! The three names to vote on are:

  1. Nyela
  2. Elphaba
  3. Zuri

Visit the Zoo’s Education Center to vote for your favorite name!
